FLOOD INSURANCE SET TO EXPIRE NOVEMBER 18, 2011

Time is running out on the temporary extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). After November 18, the NFIP will expire if a longer term plan isn’t approved. The NFIP Call for Action is still live and we need your help to get REALTORS® to respond in big numbers over the next two weeks. The House passed their 5-year extension bill this summer and the Senate must do the same. The current response rate is up slightly to 8.47%, with 70,917 members taking action. To see in real time the CFA response rate, and how your state is doing, please view our reports on the REALTOR® Action Center: http://www.realtoractioncenter.com/for-associations/cfa-report/

REDISTRICTING LAWSUIT

A group of former and current state legislators, former congressmen, local government officials and voters -- most or all Democrats -- have filed the first lawsuit challenging new congressional and legislative districts. The plaintiffs, represented by former Deputy Attorney General Eddie Speas, say the maps should be thrown out because of hundreds of split precincts, divided counties and the use of race as the predominant factor in the drawing of the districts. The lawsuit contends that the split precincts, divided counties and racially gerrymandered districts violate the state and federal constitutions. The lawsuit was filed in Wake County Superior Court. Among the plaintiffs in the lawsuit are former congressmen Bob Etheridge and Tim Valentine, current Democratic legislators Alma Adams, Linda Garrou, Don Vaughn and Rodney Moore, and former legislators Margaret Dickson, Phil Baddour and Alice Underhill.

In 2001 and 2002, Speas defended the Democratically-controlled legislature in a lawsuit brought by Republicans challenging the districts. The lawsuit names as defendants the ...

President's Message

Pete Frandano

I hope you had a great and safe October!

I wanted to touch on two topics briefly, then, given the season we are now in, I wanted to let you know a few things that I am thankful for…

RPAC: I realize I have touched on RPAC before but I believe that this is so important to the protection of our Private Property rights and our industry I felt compelled to bring it up again. I cannot stress enough that this is not a partisan program, not Republican or Democrat, but it is about giving us a COLLECTIVE voice on issues important to us: things like the Transfer Tax, terminal groins, flood insurance and the list goes on and on. As you know, we are all Ambassadors in our communities and throughout our county and our state; people listen to us because we have specialized expertise and knowledge – so it is important to channel this voice in an effective way to ensure private property rights are safe-guarded.

Where Elegance Meets Versatility…

The banquet center has been open for four years. Within these walls there has been plenty of educational moments, business networking and transactions have taken place, community fundraisers to help local needs, lots of wedding receptions and tons of BCAR events. This building already has its own history with the BCAR membership and the community. The continued support of its members and the community will make it a local icon.

As members your continued support with bringing in events and prospects is wonderful. If you ever hear any feedback from the community please share this information with Sabrena Reinhardt, Director of Events and Banquet Services. Your communication with staff is greatly appreciated. The information helps with making sure that 101 Stone Chimney Place provides excellent costumer service and remains competitive.

BCAR GMM October 13 was well attended by the local municipal candidates for 2011. BCAR members also had the privilege that evening to hear Representative Frank Iler & Senator Bill Rabon discuss the 2012 North Carolina legislative session. Middle of the Island provided catering for the evening. The event was sponsored in part by The Bellamy Law Firm, First Federal Bank, and National Property Inspections. When you see them please remember to thank them for their support.

Affiliate Sponsors - Only Treats, no Tricks in October

BCAR Affiliates really handed out the treats in October!  First we had The Bellamy Law Firm, First Federal Bank and National Property Inspections all help co-sponsor our October General Membership meeting.  Thanks for making this another successful well attended event!

Then Libby Tamson of PrimeLending sponsored our October Continuing Education class lunch.   BCAR Affiliates are the best!  Thank our Affiliates personally by USING THEM - check out the Affiliate Directory.

NC Consumers - including some who work at the Attorney General's office-are getting text messages to help lower their mortgage payment.  The texts ask you to reply HELP or STOP.  It's best NOT to reply at all.  These texts which have been traced to Russia are a ploy to get you to sign up for illegal payday loans with sky high interest rates!

NC consumers are also reporting that magazine sellers are knocking on doors, using a slick sales pitch to claim they're raising money for worthy causes.  They are claiming that proceeds will go to a local charity, school, sport team or even the troops in Afghanistan.  Beware of sellers who claim to "live in the neighborhood" if you don't recognize them!

More than a dozen calls have come in the past two weeks to report suspicious phony tech support specialists claiming to be partners with Microsoft or Windows.  They will claim that your computer has a virus and direct you to take a series of steps to fix the problem.  By following the steps, it gives the phony tech all of the data stored on your computer!  If you receive one of these calls remember, Microsoft and other computer and software companies do NOT make unsolicited calls offering tech support! Do not follow the caller's instructions and NEVER share your personal information.  If this or a similar scam has happened, make sure you contact your bank and credit card companies to alert them of a suspected fraud. Run an anti-virus and anti-spyware software on your computer. Monitor your credit report and consider placing a security freeze on your credit.
