LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Executive
Summary: Citizens United vs. FEC
On January 21, 2010 the Supreme Court issued its long awaited decision in
Citizen’s United v. Federal Election Commission. At issue in the case
was whether Citizen’s United, a nonprofit corporation that receives
donations both from individuals and for profit corporations, could
distribute in various ways a movie entitled Hillary: The Movie.
Hillary is about former Senator and presidential candidate Hillary
Clinton, and is quite critical of her and her capability and qualifications
to serve as President. Citizen’s United proposed to distribute Hillary
in close proximity to various 2008 primary elections.

President's Message
REALTORS® continue to prove that they have a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
It’s this spirit that makes us leaders in the communities that we serve and
work in. It’s this spirit that makes me so proud to be a part of such an
outstanding group of business owners and humbled to have the opportunity to
lead this group through the uncharted waters of 2010.
I would like to
encourage each of you to take the opportunity of these challenging economic
conditions to make your Association and communities a better place. Get
involved! This year there will be legislative challenges and as REALTORS®
we’ve proven that we can make a difference. The State will be looking hard
at Tax on Services and our industry is a prime target. Be sure to support
RPAC so that your local, State and National leaders have the tools to work
hard to represent the best interests of our industry.
It is important
to know that while you are focused on your individual businesses, the
leadership is focused on the business of the Association. There is no doubt
that we are facing challenging times. This team of committed volunteers is
fully engaged in moving the real estate industry in Brunswick County in a
positive direction.

NAR Donating $550,000 to Haiti Relief
NAR
is contributing $550,000 to relief of victims of the Haiti earthquake, and
is calling upon its 1.2 million members to help. "REALTORS® help build
communities and there is no better time than now to do that in Haiti," says
NAR President Vicki Cox Golder. NAR is donating $500,000 to the Clinton Bush
Haiti Fund and another $50,000 has already been donated to The Harvest of
Haiti, founded by a 2007 winner of REALTOR® Magazine's Good Neighbor Awards,
Patrick Moore. Moore's humanitarian outreach program in Haiti supports
orphans, delivers clean water, and provides medical care to more than 3,500
people a year.
Part of the NAR fund came from Lowe's, a partner of NAR’s REALTOR Benefits®
Program, who contributed $100,000 that was matched by NAR.
