House bill 1305 is the bill that makes significant changes to the Beach Plan that provides insurance for the coastal areas of North Carolina.  The full NC House passed the bill and it went to the NC Senate.  The Senate Commerce Committee, chaired by Senator RC Soles, met today and approved several changes to the bill.

President's Message

Fellow BCAR Members,

Our third
General Membership Meeting is fast approaching.  The meeting is Tuesday August 11 beginning at 11:30 am.  General Membership Meetings are a service to the members so they can network with friends and colleagues and gain valuable information from our guest speakers.  It is a privilege to have Ken Fears, Senior Economist with the National Association of REALTORS®, discuss the most recent trends in the real estate market at this meeting.  Also on the agenda at this meeting is a bylaws vote to allow online voting, a service our members have asked for the last few years.  You need to reserve your space soon to have your vote counted on this important bylaw change.  Click here to sign up now.

I want to personally thank Steve Candler for accepting the appointment of Executive Vice President (EVP) by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors (BOD).  Steve has served our association as interim EVP since March 1, 2009.  You may be familiar with his service to the association as the Government Affairs Director and how he led the successful countywide campaign to defeat the real estate transfer tax.  What you may not know about Steve is his background and qualifications.  He has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Management and has several years of experience in county and municipal management.  Steve is very familiar with our association, its staff and its members.  He wants to improve customer service and maintain a conservative fiscal approach in these unprecedented economic times.  Please join me in welcoming Steve to his new position with BCAR.

I want to thank all the members who participated in the informational meetings.  These meetings, hosted by the Executive Committee, detailed the financial situation of the association and the changes that took place over the last year.  For those of you that attended, you know that our volunteers have spent countless hours assuring that our association is headed in the right direction, while still providing the core services to you, our members.  I appreciate every member’s patience during this process of discovery.  The governance changes and budget adjustments instituted by our leadership and membership help ensure the future viability of our association.

Thanks to everyone who sent cards of congratulations to my family for the birth of little Bill Hill (Trey).  He is an enormous amount of work, but brings us so much happiness and joy.

Shannon Hill,
2009 BCAR President
